 Mission Statement for 2k-Times(tm)
 February 10, 1997

While 2k-Times will hopefully be a nominal financial success, its birth
was motivated by a personal and self-serving objective other than
financial profit. In describing myself to myself, two words close to the
top are 'computers' and 'integrity'. What I have seen in the last two
years among my associates, clients, and both the technical and common
media led me to conclude that a crisis of unawareness was leading toward
the computer industry's blackest day ... and this time it WOULD be the
computer's fault! Use of 'computers' and 'integrity' in the same breath
could be an oxymoron Jan. 1, 2000.

2k-Times publishes in two media; the common press through a periodic
column in traditional printed newspapers, and through our World Wide Web
site. By necessity our printed articles are directed toward the computer
layman, and we make an attempt to hold interest with enough humor to get
the reader to the point we are trying to make; that computers need some
attention now. The WWW site, in addition to reprinting our columns, will
attempt to address a broader audience. We will go well into the technical
aspects with both problems and solutions.

The format for the WWW site is broken into two sections: links and
content. Eventually a token may be asked for commercial links, but
accounts receivable / sales shall be kept rigidly separate from editorial
function. I hope we can attract a couple of sponsors without appearance of
 selling the farm.

 The content consists of:

2k-Times Columns - written by or for 2k-Times and after they have appeared
in the traditional printed media. As these are directed toward the layman
they will necessarily be low in technospeak. Editorial comment from
readers with opposing views will be appended if appropriate. Printed
columns will fly the 2k-Times logo and reference our Web pages.

Papers, Articles, or Columns - where the author has requested or granted
permission for posting. 2k-Times will try to review each article and, in
unique situations, will attach appropriate comments from opposing views.
The author's e-mail, web page, and affiliation will be published unless
 the author requests otherwise.

Reviews of Articles - published elsewhere with references to source
documents or direct links if possible. We will rigorously identify
authorship and sources when discussing writings from the public media, and
solicit rebuttal from the author if we take an opposing editorial view. We
will review or summarize selected articles published to commercial
Websites addressing Y2K, always soliciting comments from the author before
publicly posting our review, and always including e-mail and/or links to
the full document unless the author requests otherwise. Articles appearing
on personal Web sites or received through other non- public communications
will not be reviewed nor summarized without approval from the author. We
do reserve the right to quote from such communications, and shall make
every effort to keep the quotes in context.

2k-Times Technical Papers - writings we have produced which are not
suitable for our newspaper columns due to their technical content. This
heading will also include some limited-audience open letters of an
 editorial nature.

The contents written by or specifically for 2k-Times are copyrighted and
may not be reproduced or distributed without the consent of 2k-Times. In
keeping with our mission, it is our intent to give this permission very
liberally. Our pages may be linked without specific permission.

These are pretty high-minded objectives for an old Indiana hippie but with
your help we will succeed. The mission is to inform, warn, scare, and
assist in the War to End All Wars for our profession. Our enemy is apathy,
denial, and TIME. The measure of success will only be known in January,
 2000.
