This site is producing e-versions of early editions of *Scientific
American*; it is not affiliated with the magazine now publishing, and it
would appear to be sponsored by IBM.  Volume I for 1845, issues nos. 
1-2-3 are on-line, but the promised date for issue 4 has been missed by
a couple of weeks.  There is also a searchable index for volumes 3-14.

Similarly , "Penny Magazine", published 1835ff, appears here,
unsponsored.  Both journals are copyright "Electronic Historical
Publications" and appear to be based in the history department at the
University of Rochester under the editorship of Roger Corrie.
