GALATEA

(Link inactive 14 May 2004)
Galatea is the first Dutch interdisciplinairy e-zine. After months of
sturdy preparation, it now opens at September 7 1996
In Galatea you will find hypermedia articles on culture, literature and
the arts in diffrent ages, including painting, sculpture, drawing,
photography, film and installations. The articles are written by
outstanding Dutch and international scholars and other experts, and both
lavishly and efficiently illustrated. Galatea offers news on exhibitions
and publications of interest.
Galatea appears four times a year and each issue will have a theme. The
first one is Birth. So, in the opening issue you read about the birth of
Arthur and Merlin in the Middle Ages, birth in de 17th century and the
rise of Dutch Theatre in the fin de siecle. Galatea also contains
articles on the various depictions of the myths of Galatea. It appeared
that many artists through the ages were inspired by Pygmalion's statue
Galatea or the story about the nereid Galatea and her lovers Acis and
Polyphemus.
The first issue is completely in Dutch, but with international
contributions new articles/next issues may include articles written in
other languages.
Galatea renews itself continually. Each issue is updated while it stands.
Galatea is an initiative of Word & Image studies, VU-Amsterdam en is not
merely a magazine on the Internet, but also a site where contributing
scholars in the humanities, researchers of forms of digital
representation, and artists meet the Web's international forum of users.
At this site we seek to develop new forms of communicating on visual and
literary culture, both traditional and modern, in ways that combine the
best of quality magazines and the new media.
Plug in on literature and culture!
