Occupational Therapy in Mental Health provides professionals with a forum in
which to discuss today's challenges--identifying the philosophical and
conceptual foundations of the practice; sharing innovative evaluation and
treatment techniques; learning about and assimilating new methodologies
developing in related professions; and communicating information about new
practice settings and special problem areas particular to psychiatric
occupational therapy.
The journal serves as a valuable tool for helping therapists deal
effectively with the challenges of the field. It emphasizes articles and
reports that are directly relevant to practice. It also deals with
theoretical and philosophical issues which provide the foundation for
treatment approaches.
Articles specifically focus on:
* description and application of various frames of reference to support
therapeutic practice
* studies dealing with measurable outcomes in the areas of social
competence, activities of daily living, pre-vocational training, and task
performance
* use of new evaluation and treatment techniques with reference to group
process and activity modalities
* description of creative programming and experiences in working with
difficult patients and special diagnoses, such as borderline patients and
those with anorexia nervosa
* interviews with prominent leaders in mental health OT and related
disciplines
* effective approaches to new issues in mental health practice, such as AIDS
* changes in the delivery of mental health services and their relevance to
OT
* important issues in the education of mental health OTs
* clinical and administrative relationships between occupational therapists
and activity therapists
The timely material featured in the journal is especially useful to
occupational therapists in mental health clinics, psychiatric hospitals,
mental health programs, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools and
guidance centers, human service agencies, and transitional living programs.
