The Washburn Law Journal is a scholarly publication edited
entirely by Washburn University law students. Under the
leadership of the Editor-in-Chief, in consultation with a faculty
advisory committee, the Senior Board of Editors publishes three
issues each year. Students are invited to become members of the
Washburn Law Journal on the basis of performance in a writing
competition and class rank after each of their first three
semesters of law school. During the junior year, the student is
responsible for researching and writing a case comment. During
the senior year, each student, except members of the Senior
Board of Editors, writes a more extensive note on a legal topic of
the student's choice. To complete membership on the Journal
staff, all students must complete a case comment and a note of
publishable quality. Members also assist the Senior Board of
Editors in the many editorial tasks necessary to the publication
of the Journal, including associate editing. Each student may
elect to take one to four credit hours and each member of the
Senior Board of Editors may elect to take an additional two credit
hours by writing a note. In the spring, second year staff members
are invited to apply for positions on the Senior Board of Editors.
These positions allow the member to exert an active influence on
the quality of the Journal and to gain even more from the law
journal experience. Membership on the Senior Board of Editors
provides the student with invaluable experience in legal analysis
and writing and is recognized by the profession as one of the
highest accomplishments available to a law student.
