The Library will host Mary Lou McDonald, Vice President of the Irish political party Sinn Fein and Teachta Dala (member of the Irish Parliament), on Wednesday, November 4 at 6:00 pm in the Murray Room on the 5th floor of Lauinger Library. McDonald will speak on Women, Governance and Ireland: 100 Years of Struggle and Achievement.
McDonald originally entered Irish politics as a member of the moderate party Fianna Fáil before joining Sinn Fein, the storied republican political party with a controversial history. After unsuccessfully running for Irish Parliament in 2002, McDonald became Sinn Fein’s first Member of the European Parliament in 2004. McDonald served in European Parliament until 2009, sitting on the Employment and Social Affairs Committee and Civil Liberties Committee.
After leaving the European Parliament, McDonald was chosen as the Vice President of Sinn Fein before successfully winning a seat in the Irish Parliament in 2011, representing Dublin Central. During her time in Parliament, McDonald has been active in social and economic issues, sitting on the Public Accounts Committee.
