Ultimaker S5

a white 3d printer

The Ultimaker S5 is the newest and largest 3D printer in the Maker Hub. With its dual extrusion system, it allows for the creation of complex models with support structures in different materials, promoting design freedom and precision. This feature is particularly useful for printing with soluble supports, which dissolve in water, resulting in extremely smooth and detailed prints. The Ultimaker S5 boasts an even larger build volume compared to the S3, making it ideal for both large-scale prototypes and intricate functional parts. Additionally, its advanced detection system can identify and pause printing issues, minimizing failures and ensuring higher success rates.

Because of its large print volume, users must provide their own PLA filament when using the S5. When ordering filament, be sure to buy 2.85mm diameter filament. The more common size, 1.75mm, will not work with the S5. If you are uncertain about buying your own PLA, send an email to makerhub@georgetown.edu and the Maker Hub team can help you choose the right option. The following is a list of recommended PLA suppliers:

The Ultimaker S5 in the Maker Hub is set up to work primarily with PLA, however many other materials are also compatible. Before purchasing alternative materials, please email makerhub@georgetown.edu to make sure we can accommodate your print job.
