Recalls & Holds
Placing a HOLD on items from Georgetown University's Main Campus and Off-Campus Shelving
- To have a book held for you at a circulation desk, click the "Georgetown Request" link in the HoyaSearch item record.
- If the item is part of our circulating collection and not checked out, staff will retrieve the item for you and hold them at your preferred library's circulation desk for 10 days. If the item is checked out, this will trigger a recall (see below).
- If you need the item immediately, you may find it faster to retrieve the item from the library shelves yourself. While library staff retrieve items throughout the day, expect a 24 hour turnaround time. Deliveries between campus branches are made once in the morning per business day. Requests for items from Off-Campus Shelving can take up to 48 hours.
- If another patron has retrieved an item from the shelves before library staff can page the item for you, your hold will remain on the item, but the patron with the item in-hand will be allowed to check it out for 14 days. Please note that, in this instance, the 14 day borrowing period applies to all patrons, including those with extended borrowing privileges (e.g. graduate students, faculty, etc.).
Placing a RECALL on items from Georgetown University's Main Campus libraries and Off-Campus Shelving
- All borrowers may request items that are checked out to another patron. Before recalling, please check that if there is an available copy in the Consortium that you can request instead (this may get the item to you faster).
- If no Consortium copy is available, you can recall a checked out Georgetown items by clicking on the "Georgetown Request" link when you're viewing the record for the item you want.
- You will be notified by email when an item is recalled from you. Recalled books will be due 14 days after the recall request has been placed, regardless of when you checked it out. Please note that this applies to all patrons, including those with extended borrowing privileges (e.g. graduate students, faculty, etc.).
- Items recalled to be placed on Course Reserves must be returned in seven days, regardless of how long you have had the book checked-out.
- If you still need the recalled item after you have returned it, place a hold on it or check HoyaSearch to see if there is another copy available.
RECALL Fines
- Recall fines apply to all borrowers and are $5 per item per day. There is no maximum limit on recall fines.
RECALL Notices
- Recall notices are automatically generated and e-mailed. You should regularly check your HoyaSearch Account on the Library's website to check for recalls on your items in case the recall notification e-mail ends up in a spam folder.
RECALLS during Summers and Intersessions
- Materials are subject to recall at ANY TIME. If you plan to be out of town for an extended period of time, please return borrowed items or arrange with someone to receive notices and return recalled material for you. Main Campus libraries are open during intersessions, so recalled items may be due any time the libraries are open.
