Crafting a Seat - Making an Irish Low Stool with Gavin Fritsch (1)

In the first session of this three-part series, you’ll begin crafting an Irish Low Stool, an ancient yet versatile piece of furniture that has been used for centuries.

Starting with the seat, you’ll learn the fundamentals of woodworking and furniture making. We’ll explore how to prepare the seat base, using traditional tools like the low-angle jack plane to smooth the wood. You’ll set a compass to trace the outline of the seat and mortise lines for the legs, and then carefully cut the seat on a band saw. You’ll have the option to round over the edges or create a more sculpted finish with a spoke shave or drawknife. By the end of this session, your stool’s seat will be ready to house the legs, laying the foundation for the rest of the project. This hands-on experience provides an essential introduction to woodworking that will serve you well in future furniture-building projects.
