Building a Bridge: Welcoming the LGBT Catholic with Justice

Father James Martin, S.J.

Join the Library, the LGBTQ Resource Center, and the Division of Student Affairs for the Annual Ellen Catherine Gstalder Memorial Lecture on January 31. This year's lecture will feature Father James Martin, SJ, who will discuss his new book, Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion, and Sensitivity. Building a Bridge, adapted from an address Father Martin gave to New Ways Ministry, looks at the relationship between LGBT Catholics and the Church and draws a map for repairing and strengthening the bonds between these two communities.

Father Martin is a Jesuit priest, editor at large of America magazine, and bestselling author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage, The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything, and Between Heaven and Mirth. He has written for many publications, including the New York Times andThe Wall Street Journal, and he is a regular commentator in the national and international media. Before entering the Jesuits in 1988, Father Martin graduated from the Wharton School of Business and worked for General Electric for six years. In 2017, Pope Francis appointed him to be a Consultor for the Vatican's Secretariat for Communication.
