Make Your Own Japanese Stab Bound Book!

a group of people standing in a line showing off their books

Experience the intersection of craft, history, and storytelling in this hands-on bookbinding workshop led by Elizabeth Kean, Maker Hub volunteer alum and Creative Writing graduate. In collaboration with the Creative Writing Minor and Booth Family Center for Special Collections, this workshop will introduce you to the Japanese stab binding technique while exploring the rich tradition of bookmaking.

Participants will have the opportunity to view rare historical books from Special Collections, showcasing different binding styles and techniques from around the world. Then, you’ll get hands-on experience crafting your own hardcover Japanese stab-bound booklet, perfect for journaling, poetry, or creative writing.

If you’d like to pre-print pages with content (such as writing, poetry, or images) in preparation for the binding process, visit the Maker Hub on March 13th from 4:30-5:30 PM for assistance. Otherwise, your bound book will become a blank book, perfect as a journal, sketchbook, or personalized notebook.

No prior bookbinding experience is necessary; snacks and all bookbinding materials will be provided. Close-toed shoes are required in the Maker Hub. Please see the Maker Hub website for all rules.
