The Lattes and Lit book club will meet over Zoom on Thursday, August 22 from 7:30-8:30 pm for its final discussion of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s masterpiece, “The Brothers Karamazov.” Readers interested in joining the last meeting can RSVP through this form.
If you missed out on spending the summer with one of Russia’s most renowned novelists, fear not! In early September, the club will host a discussion of this year’s Marino Family International Writers' Academic Workshop selection, “What Strange Paradise” by Omar El Akkad.
All new Georgetown students will be reading “What Strange Paradise” this summer, and all other students are invited to join them in reading the novel early this fall. In addition to the Lattes and Lit discussion the week of September 2-6, there will be a book signing and opportunity for informal conversations with Omar El Akkad during the Library Resources Fair at New Student Orientation on Tuesday, August 27, from 1 - 3 p.m.
“What Strange Paradise” follows the story of Amir, a 9-year-old Syrian boy who survives the sinking of a dilapidated ship carrying him and other refugees to asylum. After washing up on a nearby island, he meets a local teenage girl named Vänna, who feels like an outsider in her homeland. Though Vänna and Amir are complete strangers and don’t speak a common language, Vänna is determined to do whatever it takes to help Amir find his way to safety in a hostile world.
