The Ellen Catherine Gstalder C’98 Memorial Lecture makes a welcome return April 27, after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. This year’s lecture will feature a panel discussion, “Responding to Anxiety and Depression Among our Youth: Panel Discussion on Student Well-Being and Belonging.” Panelists will merge scholarly and practitioner approaches to addressing anxiety and depression among young people today, with discussion of factors such as efforts to build coping mechanisms, the role of peer support, and the lingering impacts of COVID lockdowns. Panelists will include:

Kathryn Castle, Georgetown’s Assistant Vice President of Student Health. Prior to joining Georgetown, she was Psychology Chief and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at Rochester’s School of Medicine.

Eleanor Daugherty, Georgetown’s newly appointed Vice President for Student Affairs and an advocate for student well-being and equity for 25 years. Most recently, Dr. Daugherty served as the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at the University of Connecticut where she has spent the last eight years working with campus partners as well as legislative partners to improve student experience on various matters including mental health and wellbeing, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), and Title IX compliance.

Durriya Meer, Director of Georgetown University’s Counseling and Psychiatric Service (CAPS), has 20 years of experience in psychology and higher education counseling at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Michigan.

Jennifer Woolard, Georgetown Professor of Psychology and Adjunct Professor of Law, leads the Georgetown Community Research Group, which studies individual and family experiences with systems of care and control in an effort to create fair, effective, and just legal practices.

This year’s Gstalder event will take place from 5:30–7 p.m. in the Bioethics Research Library. It is open to Georgetown students, staff, and faculty; Library Associates; and members of the public.
