The Recommended Reading display on Lau3 for May and June will highlight authors that left a legacy and shaped global awareness.

One such author, Jung Chang, originally wrote Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China in 1991. The writings included detailed family histories and accounts about the traditional foot binding rituals from centuries past and described other traditions.

Chang's book was banned in China in 1994, but still earns global attention. The author created a lasting legacy and broader understanding of Chinese traditions. Chang altered global understanding, like many other autobiographies now on display.

The last 125 years saw two world wars, decolonization, revolutions, and sweeping movements for civil and human rights. The legacies of these authors left a mark on citizens and governments, and their legacies were preserved or created through their research, writing, and self-expression.
