Staff Spotlight: Joe Williams

Headshot of Joe Williams, a middle-aged white man with dark hair and a beard.

Name, job title, and department: Joe Williams, Associate University Librarian for Scholarly Resources and Services, Library Administration.

What do you do—in one sentence: I coordinate and administrate many of the library’s public-facing services.

Where are you from? I’m originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, but moved to North Carolina and mostly stayed in the Chapel Hill area for the last three decades with a few stints in Texas and Oregon.

Why Georgetown/D.C.? Georgetown has a great reputation out of the gate. I was attracted to the focus on teaching and student support as well as the way the university integrates its values into its mission.

What are some of your hobbies? I enjoy cooking Indian food, bird watching, and playing music. I play guitar and mandolin and have been exploring groups around the area playing bluegrass music.

Favorite books? Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard, For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway, and Bleak House by Charles Dickens.

What are you listening to right now? Oh, a lot of jazz, especially stuff from the late 50s and early 60s.

What's your superpower/hidden talent? My wife says it’s appearing more traditional than I really am.

What material thing could you not live without? At one point I would’ve said my car, but I’ve been enjoying life without one since moving here, so I guess my binoculars!

If you didn’t work in your current field, what would you be doing? Oh, I’d be playing music.

You are building your dream house. What is one room or feature you would want to include? It’d have to have a fireplace. I lived for many years in a wood-heated house, and I just liked everything about it.
