Cartola and the History of Rio de Janeiro

History Final Paper on the painting of musician Cartola pictured by Henrique Sodré in the late 1900's.

This project is a painting of musician Cartola pictured by Henrique Sodré in the late 1900's. I was assigned to create a piece of artwork inspired by the content of my Rio de Janeiro, History class. I chose to focus on this photograph of Cartola from Georgetown's collection of Sodré's photographs as Cartola encompasses Brazilian music and most specifically, Samba. The contrast of the bright and vibrant background with the sombre representation of Cartola explores how Brazilian music is so popular, however, one of the key figures, Cartola, is not given the recognition he deserved from the public. For me, this painting acknowledges Cartola's fame and almost serves as a thank you. The process was time consuming, however, i am extremely happy with the execution.
