See the future of economic surveys by delving into the Annual Integrated Economic Survey (AIES). This new annual survey combines the following seven existing annual business surveys into a streamlined single survey:
· Annual Capital Expenditures Survey (ACES)
· Annual Retail Trade Survey (ARTS)
· Annual Survey of Manufacturers (ASM)
· Annual Wholesale Trade Survey (AWTS)
· Manufacturers’ Unfilled Orders Survey (M3UFO)
· Report of Organization (COS)
· Service Annual Survey (SAS)
The AIES provides key measures of economic activity, including the only comprehensive national and subnational data on business capital expenditures, employment, expenses, inventories, payroll, and revenues on an annual basis. AIES will serve as a benchmark for Census Bureau indicator programs and will provide updates to the Longitudinal Research Database (LRD),
Instead of breaking each company’s operations into distinct components for specific surveys, the new Annual Integrated Economic Survey will reduce respondent burden as well as look at firms holistically. Data collection for the 2024 AIES began on March 14, 2025. The U.S. Census Bureau will begin releasing data from the 2023 AIES data collection cycle in the summer of 2025.
After this session, you will know the origins of the previous surveys, the purpose of the new survey, the methodology of collection, the scope of topics covered, and the possible uses of the data.
