About the Social Impact Making a Difference: Milk and Cookies Series

Lauinger Library supports Georgetown University community members who believe that business development transforms communities and that quality information helps social entrepreneurs succeed.

The friendly Milk and Cookies Series will launch aspiring social entrepreneurs that say “someone should do something about that” on the first steps in making their passion projects come to life — all while eating cookies and drinking milk (gluten-free cookies and vegan milk will be available). The series will guide participants in gathering information before they move into the funding and operations stages of starting a nonprofit or business. Most events will be held simultaneously in the Murray Room of Lauinger Library and via Zoom.

Monday, February 13, 1–2 p.m.: Social Impact Keynote by Professor Melissa Bradley. Georgetown University promotes cura personalis as part of the Jesuit tradition, meaning the care of others. As a business school alumni and professor, Melissa actively engages in social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurship is more than just the amalgamation of business and social good; it is much more complicated and nuanced than that. Unfortunately, while many folks are eager to "care" for others, they are often ill-equipped to do so and often do more harm than good. The talk will cover topics Melissa addresses in her social entrepreneurship class ranging from managing bias to understanding the problem and financing viable solutions.

Tuesday, February 28, 5:30–7 p.m.: Special Chalk Talk with Georgetown's Entrepreneurs in Residence (EIR) where you can bring your ideas in the ideation phase of identifying a social issue where action can make a difference. You can workshop the idea with experienced entrepreneurs who have been where you are now.

Wednesday, March 22, 5–6 p.m.: Designing an Effective Social Intervention: Lessons Learned from the Georgetown Pivot Program. Georgetown Pivot Program Academic Director Alyssa Lovegrove will discuss the ways ideas become a reality and ways to turn passion into action to help a community.

Wednesday, March 29, 5–6 p.m.: Business Librarian Jennifer C. Boettcher will review research strategies and business tools with hands-on guidance through the early stages of building a service that can transform a community.
