The Georgetown Humanities Initiative and Georgetown University Libraries cordially invite you to a conversation with Michael Sloan, interdisciplinary artist, graphic novelist, and Pulitzer Prize–winning illustrator. In a round table with students, Michael Sloan will discuss the power of graphic storytelling to illuminate pressing social issues, drawing on his work at the intersection of art, journalism, and narrative. He will share insights into his creative process and demonstrate his drawing in real time.
Michael Sloan is an editorial cartoonist and the creator of The Zen of Nimbus comics, graphic novels and paintings. His illustrations have appeared in many publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, and The Washington Post, and have been awarded three silver medals from The Society of Illustrators in NYC.
Michael Sloan and the author Jake Halpern created Separation and Welcome to the New World ––graphic narratives published by The New York Times that illuminate the human dimensions of displacement and immigration. Welcome to the New World was awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize in editorial cartooning and the graphic novel based on this groundbreaking comic was published by Metropolitan Books.
Michael Sloan is also a prolific musician and composer, and records classical and jazz music playing a wide variety of instruments, especially classical guitar, bass guitar and piano. He has over 260 music albums available on all major streaming platforms including Spotify and Apple Music.
