Main Campus Libraries ILL Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

To request an item from ILL please log in to ILLiad and submit a request.

If an item requested through ILL is determined to be available through HoyaSearch, the request will be canceled and sent back to the user.

Interlibrary Loan is available to all Georgetown University Main Campus and Georgetown University in Qatar faculty, students and staff. Medical Center users should use Dahlgren Memorial Library's Interlibrary Loan Service. Law School users should use E.B. Williams Law Library's Interlibrary Loan Service. Georgetown University ILL is not available to members of the Library Associates or other fee-paying borrowers. Students and faculty from other academic universities must use the Interlibrary Loan services of their home institutions. A maximum of six requests will be processed per day. Proxy borrowing does not apply to interlibrary loans.

Picking Up Interlibrary Loans

Patrons will be notified by email when an item is received. ILL materials may be picked up at the Lauinger Service Desk.

Journal articles and book chapters are delivered to your ILLiad account in PDF format. To retrieve a PDF, log in to your ILLiad account and click on View Electronically Received Articles.

The ILL office cannot predict the location or availability of an item; therefore, we cannot guarantee a specific delivery time. Patrons are encouraged to submit requests well in advance of deadlines.

Due Dates and Renewal

All due dates are determined by the lending library. Georgetown University ILL users must adhere to the lending library's conditions for use and return materials on time. Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library, not the Georgetown ILL Office. A request for renewal must be made in advance of the original due date; if an ILL item is already overdue, renewal is not possible.

To request a renewal, click on the View/Renew Checked Out Items option in your ILLiad account. Most libraries will grant an automatic three-day grace period, and if the lending library grants a longer extension, we will contact you via email with a new due date. If the lending library does not grant a renewal, you should assume that the book is due back on the last day of that three-day grace period. It is the patron's responsibility to follow up with the ILL office about renewal requests.

ILL Fines

Late fees of $1.00 per day are assessed to each overdue ILL item until materials are returned. Payment for fines can be made in person at the Service Desk on the third floor of Lauinger Library. The patron borrowing the item is responsible for its safe return. In the event that an item is lost or damaged, the borrower is responsible for its replacement costs.

Copyright Restrictions

The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the Law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproductions. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction not be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of that order would involve violation of the law.
