Text Recycling or "Self-Plagiarism" in Scientific Discourse

The library news posted on this page is over a year old, and some information may no longer be accurate.

On October 11, the Blommer Science Library, the Georgetown University Writing Program, and the Office of Scholarly Publications will host Text Recycling or "Self-Plagiarism" in Scientific Discourse with Dr. Cary Moskovitz from Duke University.

Professor Moskovitz will discuss the common practice of text recycling or "self-plagiarism" in the science community. This practice, which involves writers in the natural and medical sciences reusing excerpts from previously published works, is convenient and ensures consistency from publication to publication. While the practice is common and accepted in a number of fields, most writing guides, textbooks, and writing courses ignore it —even in the sciences. Professor Moskovitz will discuss examples and uses of text recycling as well as the implications for undergraduate and graduate-level writing instruction.

Text Recycling or "Self-Plagiarism" in Scientific Discourse will be held at 2:30 pm in Regents 551. Learn more about the program HERE.
