Welcome to Woodstock Theological Library’s blog. For our inaugural post we feature this digital image of a copper plate engraving depicting St. Ignatius of Loyola. The engraving comes from the Vita beati patris Ignatii Loiolae, which was published in 1609 on the occasion of Ignatius’ beatification.
The copper plates are attributed to Jean Baptiste Barbé or Cornelias Galle . Nineteen of the drawings for the engravings are identified as the work of Peter Paul Rubens. The Latin captions were made Nicolaus Lancicius and Peter Pázmány. In addition to Woodstock Theological Library’s bound copy, the library also has a second copy of the plates unbound. In 2009, this celebrated work was made into an annotated facsimile reproduction to honor the four-hundredth anniversary of its publication by John O’Malley, S.J. and James P. M. Walsh, S.J.
