Retro Arcade, Photo Series Win Spring 2022 Library Showcase Awards

RetroPie Arcade V2

Every semester, the Library Showcase highlights remarkable works created using library resources. In Spring 2022 we accepted 12 outstanding projects, including Postmodern Punk Posters created by students in Professor Toni-Lee Sangastiano’s ARTS 162 - Intro to Graphic Design course, a website about Popular Culture in the Middle East, a documentary called Do Washingtonians Love Their Jobs, and an experimental narrative video by Geritza Carrasco.

We are delighted to honor two projects as the winners of the Library Staff Pick and Voters’ Choice Awards for the Spring 2022 semester.

The Voters’ Choice award goes to Kelvin Doe (C'23) for his project RetroPie Arcade V2, an upright wooden arcade cabinet that plays retro video games powered by a Raspberry Pi.“The retro games community is huge, and hundreds of people have contributed to the free and open source software that runs the arcade,” Doe said. “Projects like this show how far the game industry has come, and are a form of history in their own way.” He added that “Every member of the Georgetown community should visit the space at least once, and I'm sure they'll see why the Maker Hub has eaten up numerous hours of my free time.”

The Library Staff Pick Award, which showcases projects that made the best use of library resources, goes to Melissa Riggio (C’14, G’19), application and outreach coordinator in Georgetown’s Office of Global Education, for her photographic series Rainy Day on the Mall. “While I dabbled in being creative during my undergrad here, I didn't really get the chance to fully engage with the arts,” Riggio said. “Now, as a staff member, I feel I have more time to use the resources available to me, and am grateful for the chance to do so. I love seeing what other Hoyas are doing in the Showcase and it heartens me to see the creative pursuits happening on campus.” Riggio used the Library’s Canon DSLR camera to take her photos and Photoshop to edit, as well as “A lot of LinkedinLearning to learn how. It's been incredible what I've been able to learn through the Library's subscription to LinkedinLearning, and I honestly wouldn't be as far as I am in my photography journey if it weren't for those resources.” She also benefited from the Gelardin production studio in learning photography, since renting photo studios can cost up to $1,000 an hour, although she didn’t use it for this specific project.

The Library congratulates all of the winners and is honored to highlight these excellent creative works along with the many other outstanding projects in the Library Showcase.
