Archive of Choice at Georgetown

My digital archive contains materials documenting a rich history of debate over reproductive choice at Georgetown. My primary intention when constructing this archive was to digitize documents created between 1989 and 1991, as this was the period during which Georgetown's first pro-choice club GU Choice was granted university benefits, prompting an alumni organization to file a canon lawsuit to revoke Georgetown's status as a Catholic institution. Georgetown is a university that is simultaneously defined by its Catholic identity and its politically engaged student body, making conversations about reproductive freedom all the more controversial and complex for the university to navigate. I chose to create this archive because I want students to have access to primary sources that tell a very nuanced story of passionate Georgetown community members motivated by their commitments to the university's most fundamental values.
