From 1957 until 1964, Georgetown University included a second school that educated nurses, one that was distinguished from the longstanding Georgetown University School of Nursing. This unit was known as the Georgetown University Hospital School of Practical Nursing, which, unlike the School of Nursing, prepared students to become practical, not registered nurses. The school responded to a workforce shortage of RNs. Significantly, prior to the School of Nursing, this hospital-based unit graduated Black women nurses and men nurses.
