Imagined Rivers

This project, sponsored by the Maker-in-Residence program, is inspired by the “hidden rivers” of Washington, D.C.—the many waterways that have been buried under construction. To represent how water has shaped this city, I created two pieces of art. The first is a quilt “map,” with white appliqué sections representing the Potomac, Rock Creek, and Anacostia Rivers, while subtle white stitches reflect historical rivers that can no longer be seen today, based on a map created by designer David Ramos of the website Hidden Hydrology. The second piece is a CNC-cut topographic map of Washington, D.C.’s terrain, meant to be touched by viewers.
