Modeling retrograde amnesia in fruit flies using cold shock anesthesia

Forgetting is a familiar phenomenon known to everyone, but the neurobiological underpinnings of this process remain unclear. This project aims to use fruit flies as a model organism to investigate retrograde amnesia - the inability to remember memories formed before the onset of an event. This event can include anesthesia which can be induced using a cold shock for fruit flies. To investigate this, I am very proud of creating an apparatus that will allow me to conduct live imaging of the fruit fly brain while administering the cold shock. To do this, I have heavily relied upon the 3D printer and laser cutting available in the Maker Hub. This project means a great deal to me and I have learned so many new skills in an effort to figure out how to answer my research question.
