Sunset Over the Hudson River
oil on canvas; 1873
Gift of Mary C. McEvitt, 1983
Inspired by the success of U.S. landscape painter Thomas Cole, Jasper Cropsey embraced the landscape as a means of building national pride and revealing God's hand in the beauty and detail of nature. This poetic image of a shimmering sunset over Cropsey's native Hudson River shows the growing interest in effects of light and atmosphere that came to be known as Luminism.
